If you always hire people who are smaller than you are,
we shall become a company of dwarfs. If, on the other hand,
you always hire people who are bigger than you are,
we shall become a company of giants.

Creativity is like rhythm. You’re either born with it, or you’re not. Sure, you can learn to dance, but if you ain’t got rhythm, you won’t win Strictly.

So you have to ask yourself, are you creative?

If you think you are - and whether you’ve trained in advertising or not - we want to hear from you.
We have no education requirements, no age limits, and no previous experience is necessary.

gRAFT
GLORY
GRENADES

You’ll be challenged by three types of brief:

GRAFT – Work which hones your craft skills, including art direction, copywriting and design

Glory – Big ideas, campaign thinking – the kind of work that may take months to create and craft

Grenades – High-speed, micro-budget, smart- thinking work which will often go live within hours
Each intern will also be buddied with a creative from one of our agencies. Someone to turn to, someone to learn from, someone to go to the pub with.
But be under no illusion. This is not ʻwork experienceʼ. This is work. And you will be worked hard.

After six months of brain-wringing, finger-cramping, heart-twisting work, you’ll have yourself a portfolio.

That portfolio will then be critiqued by the Executive Creative Directors from across the Ogilvy group.

Should they be impressed, the ECDs may then offer you a further six-month contract as a junior creative in their agency. All with a view to a full-time job.

We may employ all of you. Or we may employ none.
Ultimately, that will be up to you.

This is an internship like no other.
While here, you'll tackle briefs from a
number of different creative agencies:

If you can’t advertise yourself,
what hope do you have of advertising anything else?

Applying for The Pipe is a three-step process

BE YOURSELF

Send us one piece of work that proves your creativity.

If you’ve been to ad school, it could be an ad you’ve done, or a campaign you’ve worked on. If not, it could be a brilliant film, a moving poem, a cunning piece of code. It could be a photo series, a website, a sketch, a song, an idea for a game-changing business.

It could be anything. So long as it’s one thing, and it shows your creativity.

Two things to consider:

  1. We aren’t looking for pipe-related work. Your entry should probably be something you’ve already done.
  2. We get a lot of applications. So keep it simple.

PROVE YOURSELF

If you’re one of the top 200 applicants, we’ll send you a brief. And you’ll have two weeks to respond.

Great ideas are always popular.

So all 200 responses will be displayed anonymously inside our office, and every Ogilvy employee will be invited to choose a favourite.

After all, nurturing talent is everyone’s job.

SELL YOURSELF

If you created one of the 50 most-liked entries, you’ll be invited to Sea Containers for an interview.

Here you’ll meet some of the top people from Ogilvy, have a chance to ask questions, and get another opportunity to sell yourself.

After all, we’re committing to six months together. It’s best we see if we get along.

And the top 14 candidates will be welcomed into The Pipe.

Big ideas come from the unconscious. This is true in art, in science, and in advertising. But your unconscious has to be well informed or your idea will be irrelevant. Stuff your conscious mind with information, then unhook your rational thought process. You can help this process by going for a long walk, or taking a hot bath or drinking half a pint of claret. Suddenly, if the telephone line from your unconscious is open, a big idea wells up within you.
